About Me

I am Kamal Nissanka from Sri Lanka. I am a lawyer by profession and a keen student of politics. This interest of politics, goes back to my student days. After my graduation from the University of Peradeniya,Sri Lanka in 1986 I joined hand with a small group intellectuals who were committed to liberal ideas and views. It was a period when great changes had taken place in Eatern Europe. I was in search of an explanation to those changes but in Sr lanka no body seemed interesting to address the phenomenon.

My facinating subject is political Ideology. Failure of socialism has diven me to seriously study other ideologies. As most intellectuals and academics in Sri Lanka I also thought that liberalism was buried and outdated with fall of the Liberal Paty in Great Britain in the early part of the 20th cenury.

But with my associasion with the Sri Lankan liberals  I came to realise that liberalism is about empowerment of the individual and enhansment of freedom.

We were able to form the Liberal Party of Sr Lanka i 1987 and I was the editor of the party news paper.

I am also a liberal. What are the steps taken by the Liberal Party to direct the attention of the government or the people towards the energy/oil crisis. We have probably passed the peak oil period and even if we haven’t the predictions according to current data put the date at 2020.
Also what are your thoughts on religion in Sri Lanka. I strongly believe that Sri Lanka should become a more secular country. The influence of religion in politics is so great that according to my understanding the constitution requires the president of Sri Lanka to be a buddhist. There are radical religious groups also in parliament. As far as I know there is not a single member of parliament or council who represents the “infidels” like myself
